Decorating Modern Industrial Style is about implementing clean lines, using a mix of reclaimed woods, stellar metals and over-sized unique lighting.
Decorating industrial loft style is best suited for large open spaces with high ceilings, original wood flooring, tall windows with ample sunlight and exposed brick. All the design elements are met in a open loft like this one by building upon texture and balance.
Designer Tip #1: Do create customized pieces to fulfill your vision.
My client wanted a vinyl storage console to keep showcase his vinyl collection. This came to be a challenge- what I found was poorly constructed pieces that were too small to hold 150 albums or a console that didn’t match my vision of mixed metals to coordinate with the industrial theme. To solve my predicament, I decided to custom design it and create a truly unique piece, according to the style and function of what we envisioned. Go to Etsy.com and you can pick from a array of skilled builders to create the exact furniture piece that you desire. What I also love is about this piece is that is has a mix of metals including gun metal to complement the large gun metal and brass mirror in the same space. The Industrial Evolution Furniture Co. far exceeded my goals and delivered exactly as they promised.
The first picture is a sketch from the design process and the second picture is the finished product. Here are the specs:
- 60″L x 18″W x 39″H
- 5″ Niche
- Satin Black Stain
- Hex bolt fasteners
- Raw steel – steel finish
- 4 equal doors on front
- 2 single expanded metal doors in center
- 2 glass doors on each end
- 1 fixed wooden shelf will hold 12.5″ records under it and on it
- 2″ high feet
Designer Tip #2: Introduce Reclaimed Wood Shelving.
Add a hand-crafted reclaimed wood bar for entertaining…
One of the goals for designing this space was to add sophistication. A classic place to add a bold, sophisticated accent is a bookcase or free hanging shelving. Here I implemented a hand crafted bookcase with gun metal piping and dark walnut stain. You can personalize your shelving with your favorite book collection, family memorabilia or favored travel experiences. Here we also added a unique set of metal piping book holders to coordinate.
Designer Tip #3: Add accents such as a tall metal mirror.
When selecting accents, first consider the size of the space you’re working with. Since I had such a grand space with high ceilings, I needed my accents to be sized accordingly. This mirror is encased with brass and gunmetal- a truly exquisite piece. You can find more like this at http://www.elmandiron.com/gallery
Decorating is not just about coordinating the right pieces with your style and it’s certainly not just filling an empty space. Personalizing a house is what makes it a home. Select pieces that you love and that will last. Hand crafted and unique pieces like you see in this down-town loft are conversation starters and the arrangement is modern yet it’s still welcoming and cozy for the both the resident and his guests.
Industrial Style doesn’t have to be cold and stark…
To complete the industrial loft look while adding elements of “cozy”-consider adding live plants, an overarching black lamp with a soft watt bulb, artwork, a soft rug and a cozy reading nook. Isn’t it time to put your feet up and enjoy a room that speaks life you?
