Decorating with eclectic style is all about “contradictions” yet finding that perfect balance to create harmony.
With that eclectic harmony in mind, I designed the living room you see in the photo above for my client who has a traditional and classy style yet loves to add personality and pops of color. Notice the merging of antique furniture and contemporary, as well as a mix of leather among walnut hard wood flooring.
Using different kinds of wood is within the threshold of eclectic design as long as the finish is the same. Here we have a mix of reclaimed woods. I chose a neutral palette of tans & browns with pops of bold teals to create a handsome color palette.
To add personality, we added the reclaimed wood floating shelf and vases in the window. She loves birds, so the nicely framed gallery wall in the kitchen above the dining table personalizes this common area.
If you’re looking for ways to add texture to your space, never doubt the power of a ship lap wall, like this one painted in Alabaster White from Sherwin Williams. By the way, I absolutely love this paint color and it goes on beautifully for kitchen cabinets, crown molding or trim. Its also an attractive contrast against a dark accent wall such as Teal, Aero Blue or dark Blue/Gray. I also love to add an industrial touch to all my designs- here it is contributed in the kitchen lighting.
Eclectic design encompasses a variety of styles and time periods and it’s all about achieving a composed look of chaos. If you’re ready to have some fun and personalize your space, go on and celebrate it with different colors, textures, unique pieces and divergent styles that speak life to you.
Happy Decorating!
